Chronicles of Drenyon The Golden Sword edition by NLJ Children eBooks

This is the tale of Anya, a beautiful young woman coming of age in a society that doesn't give women as many freedoms as they may want. Sons are valued more and daughters are expected to marry. When they don't, they're looked down on. When Anya is tricked into running away from home, she doesn't know where she is going or what she should do, but she makes friends unexpectedly with a talking tree. As the story progresses, this tree proves himself to be more than she originally thought.

While the tale is imaginative, there were a number of weaknesses that caused me to struggle in my reading. There were numerous POV violations, where the reader is bouncing around in different perspectives very quickly, or when we're in someone's head, and we, the readers are shown something the particular character can't see. Also, the plot was rushed in many places, and there was far more showing than telling. There were more was/were verbs than there should have been, when sentences with more active verbs might have worked better.

Having said that, the tale was very imaginative; the bones of a great tale are there. If the story were to be worked on, and passed by a professional editor, it would strengthen and flesh out a really great story.

Chronicles of Drenyon The Golden Sword edition by NLJ Children eBooks Reviews

“A time is coming when none of my tales will matter. And all that once was will be gone.”

This is a book for those who loved fairytales as a young child and want something they can read now they are older which has the same kind of atmosphere and sense of wonder.

Annya lives in a land where all young girls are expected to marry as women are not supposed to work at paid labour. She is am only child of a widowed mother and was sent away to school to learn the accomplishment most appreciated amongst her people - the ability to speak and write in an ancient language. But when she returns from school she finds it hard to settle to what is expected of her by her society and her ailing mother supports her in this.

Annya's only friend is a strange and magical talking tree who is very lonely as well and enjoys sharing the stories he knows with the beautiful young woman who will come and sleep in the shelter of his gnarled ancient trunk.

Sudden disaster changes her world and the book goes on to tell of Annya's adventures.

'She felt like paint in the midst of a brushstroke.'

The great strength of this book is the wonderful fairy-tale atmosphere the author creates and weaves throughout the world-building. There are lots of hints redolent of various myths and strange conceptual beings like 'Whitespark' and 'Eyes of the Storm'. These are all brought together into a complex and original storyline which seems to be also deeply familiar, because of the various almost archetypal elements which have been woven together so cleverly.

The pace is leisurely for much of the book, usually this is fine allowing the story the time it needs to be told, but occasionally it is a little too slow. The main characters are interesting people, but not always as well developed as I would have liked - they seem, again, more archetypes than real people, but that is often the way in fairytales and myths.

'The tree’s weight tipped over the other trees like Stonehenge.'

The single biggest issue I had with the book was that sometimes I was simply confused by it. What has Stonehenge to do with trees falling over? Who is saying what in a page of un-tagged speech? Who is where and doing what in a long descriptive passage of odd things happening? There was more than one point in the climactic confrontation when I felt completely lost in the narrative of events.

I would also suggest it is not a book for children, although listed as such. The way it is written, the themes it explores, the often complex exploration of the human condition, would be beyond any but the most sophisticated child. I would expect it to appeal much more to a teen and adult audience.

I really enjoyed the story and I was rooting for the ending which happened. I dithered between 3 and 4 stars, because on pure technicalities it is probably nearer the 3. But this is a book with a heart and its romance and wonder captured mine - it may capture yours too.
The Chronicles of Drenyon The Golden Sword written by Noreen Jenkins is a reading-for-pleasure experience although it does contain some relevant themes.
The story takes place in the Land of Drenyon, around the 17th-18th Century and is told from the point of view of Anya who lives with her widowed Mother. Anya has plenty of suitors who travel very far bearing gifts to win her hand in marriage. However, Anya ain’t feelin that. She questions everything and although a wealthy husband would mean a cushy life for her and her mother, Anya feels “hey there has got to be more to life than this”. Anya resists and due to a serious of devastating events in the Land of Drenyon, Anya becomes a reluctant leader pulling together a group of diversely different characters to try and save the land from total destruction. This is the road that is less travelled and yes it is a bumpy one.
The book actively promotes values that makes us human vs non-human. Values such as self-determination, companionship and compassion. It promotes the need to resist social conditioning and strive to live a life of significance
Yes, there are zombies in this book (representing the mindless masses who lack self-determination and will attack the innocent because “everyone else does it.”)
The story is written in the first person. It is absorbing without being dull or loose. It is an easy read with lots of action and interaction between the characters. I hope to read other works from this author soon
